Last Day

I told Scout that today was Sydney's last day this morning. She had this look of disbelief that melted into sadness but we talked about how we could still play with Sydney sometimes. I told Sydney that I needed to spend a lot of time with Random for the next few weeks but he was in school during the day so if she was lonely or bored she could call us up for a field trip.

It's been a very interesting day. We went to Office Depot and got the alphabet books that we've been working on for the last 5 months bound and stopped by Lamb's to pick up some Macaroni & Cheese for lunch. While we were waiting for the books to be bound we wandered around the crayon aisle and found some smelly crayons...we HAD to try them. Unfortunately, they smell like an old lady's perfume on steroids. Live and learn I guess.

We danced and sang and we'll be doing our last circle time in a few minutes.

The girls are oblivious and playing happily. Their best imaginary friends (both named Alexa) have been disobeying the rules a lot today so they've been in time out...so goofy.

As I said, the girls are oblivious but I've been full of emotion. I know a lot of it has to do with the intensity of the issues with Rand, the guilt I feel for breaking my commitment to Sydney & Issac, and the gratitude I feel for the Penny's willingness to change things so quickly but it also has to do with the laughter that will be a little quieter, the singing that will be a little softer and the little faces that won't be at our house every day.

Penny and Dan, thank you for letting me know and play and learn with your children. Thank you for understanding the needs of my own and for your support.

Here's one last slide show of some of our crazy moments:

I is for Inches

Today we started our unit on weights and measures. To introduce this topic we sat down together and I asked them if they remembered when they went to the doctor and they were measured...how the nurse measured their height and told them how many inches tall they were, how she measured their weight and told them how many pounds they were. Let me tell you why that was such a huge mistake. :)

The worksheets I had printed out had different objects that the girls could measure...a toothbrush, a safety pin, an eraser, stuff like that. Well once I mentioned the doctor the girls related everything they saw to getting a shot. Sydney said "Oh we can measure the pokey thing (the safety pin) so we can see how far in the shot will poke us." Scout said (measuring the line on which they were supposed to write how many inches long the eraser was), "And when they shoot us with this thing it will be 2 inches in our arms." Yikes. Obviously they have some trauma over kindergarten readiness. ^_^

I better come up with another idea before we start weighing things tomorrow!

C is for...Ah Forget it, It's too Hot. Let's have a party!

I had to run up to the Scout Office to turn in some paperwork today and on the way home I was contemplating what we were going to do once we got there. It would be 1:00...the usual Circle Time. Looking out over the hot asphalt, waiting in traffic, I reconsidered. It's too hot and too nice to sit inside!

We stopped by Albertson's and oooh'ed and aaahh'ed before we decided to get one of everything and invite the whole neighborhood.

Popsicle Party on the Gomm's back porch! WOOOOT!

Happy Limerick Day

Yep. It's that kind of day. I'm avoiding doing the weekly menus and cleaning the bathroom so I'm writing Limericks with the girls names in them. Sydney is especially hard since the only thing that any online rhyming dictionary can come up with is kidney. Anyway, I did my best. The girls didn't get them but they were happy to hear their names in a poem. HA!

There was a young girlie named Scout
She loved to scream and to shout
One day in July
She yelled out good bye
And left by cacophonous route

I met a young lady named Sydney
She liked to eat beans that were kidney
Each day during lunch
She ate up a bunch
So a toot was the hello she bid me.

C is for Caterpillar

This week we'll be talking a lot about Caterpillars. It starts with C, there are tons of crafts to do with them and lots of fun activities that reinforce the concepts we're focusing on this week.

This morning we talked about patterns. I told the girls that since they were SO smart and already knew ALL their colors we were going to start learning about patterns instead of single colors.

We talked about A-B or 1-2 patterns and made A-B caterpillar chains. They enjoyed using their new vocabulary and whenever they accidentally grabbed the wrong color they would correct themselves and talk about how that wasn't the right pattern. "Oops I tried to make an ABB pattern!"

Afterwards they went outside for a brownie and strawberry break. We'll probably run off to the library and pick up our books for the week today. I'm hoping the weather holds up and we can stop by the park for a picnic lunch after the library....I can't wait for summer!
